Music: Global Central Park SummerStage presents Taj Mahal w/ the Skatalites

Self-taught polyglot and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal originally hails from Harlem, but his unique brand of blues reflects traditions from Cuba, Hawaii, West Africa, and Europe (to name a few). A master of over 20 instruments, the singer/guitarist has been awarded two Grammys for his layered harmonica trills, jazz licks, and fingerpicked blues leads — not to mention his vocal range, which oscillates from lush and sultry to grizzled and gruff. Jamaican ska progenitors the Skatalites open, keeping the legacies of Don Drummond and Jackie Opel alive with enough choppy upstrokes and soaring brass to keep the rudies rocking steady.
