In The Apartment, Billy Wilder's satirical take on mid-century corporate life, Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine's chemistry is the undisputed draw. The lovable Lemmon plays C.C. "Bud" Baxter, an insurance clerk lost in his floor's latticework of desks. Bud, however, holds the key to ending the nine-to-five tyranny: let his superiors use his apartment for some extramarital coitus in exchange for a ride to the professional fast track. It's all swell until the gal happens to be the very charming MacLaine, whereupon Lemmon must draw the line between mensch and moneyman.
