Toeing the line between upbeat emoting and ukulele-soaked rambles, ARMS (better known as Harlem Shakes guitarist, Flavorpill copy editor, and onstage "O"-face aficionado Todd Goldstein) threads his songs with morally questionable characters and wandering, adolescent angst. On his long-brewed debut, Kids Aflame, Goldstein keens his way through sometimes sweet, sometimes seedy tales of lost boys, idle minds, and the never-ending oddity of eyes. Whether plonking through the title track's sing-along uke-stomper, echo-pining to Grizzly Bear and the Shins ("Fall"), or fuzzing out a bit of Pedro the Lion-inspired power pop ("Whirring"), ARMS' indie-rock reference points are as inspired as they are expertly applied.
