Performing Arts: Dance Battleworks Dance Company

Battleworks Dance Company's fifth-anniversary program would be exhausting for anyone other than Battleworks' remarkable dancers. Helmed by choreographer Robert Battle (who got his start with Parsons Dance Company), Battleworks' highly physical repertory ranges from the humorous to the shocking to the profound. Tonight's performance at the Joyce Theater features the NYC premiere of Reel Time, a piece set to a commissioned score by John King, known for his work with Merce Cunningham Dance Company and new-music quartet Ethel. The evening also includes two riveting solos set to classics by Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone; Overture, Battle's take on Bach; and the electrifying Juba, performed to live music.
