German-born, UK-raised composer Max Richter makes "postclassical" music. Uniting piano and strings with electronic sounds and field recordings, his pop-length arrangements are both melancholy and stunningly gorgeous. Though Richter composes his songs with a keenness for melody, adding occasional bombastic flourishes, the results are mostly subdued, measured compositions, eerily textured and haunted by distant drones. In addition to reissuing his debut solo album later this year, Richter recently released 24 Postcards In Full Colour, a record of short, experimental recordings composed for use as ringtones.
