Performing Arts: Opera Die Soldaten

German composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann's original vision for Die Soldaten was to present the opera on 12 stages surrounding the audience. The grandiose work called for 16 singing and ten speaking roles, a 100-plus piece orchestra, and a multitude of screens, projectors, tape recordings, and loudspeakers — not to mention chairs and tables used as percussion instruments. Even by operatic standards, the grandiosity of his vision was too prohibitive to stage. The work has been performed in minimal iterations since, however, until the RuhrTriennale commissioned the work as it was intended. The impressive production includes the 110-piece Bochumer Symphoniker and achieves an immense opera experience, half a century in the making.
