Music: Global Rachid Taha w/ Dengue Fever

Get ready for the best possible kind of culture shock as LA's Dengue Fever bring psychedelic Cambodian pop to Central Park. Lead singer Chhom Nimol often sings in her native Khmer, evoking a tone and timbre reminiscent of tunes in classic Bollywood films; in fact, it was only after the success of the band's new album, Venus on Earth, that the six-member troupe incorporated English into its music at all. Combining foreign elements with more recognizable sounds like Farfisa organ, the band channels notables ranging from Os Mutantes to Blondie. Playing in support of French rocker Rachid Taha this afternoon, Dengue Fever make a tropical wonderland out of NYC's humid air.
