- Wet Hot American Summer
Written by The State and Stella alumni David Wain and Michael Showalter, Wet Hot American Summer appropriately kicks off the L Magazine's Summer Screen series at McCarren Park Pool. The gloriously absurd satire of '80s summer-camp films centers around "nice guy" counselor Coop (Showalter), who chases vixen Katie (Marguerite Moreau) as the camp's resident cast of oddballs run amok on the last night of the summer. While some just couldn't seem to embrace the film's surreal touches (a talking can of vegetables, a doomsday comet, a disconcertingly intense gay-sex scene), WHAS has become a bona-fide cult classic, paving the way for the alt-comedy scene that's flourished since the film's 2001 release.
