Phoebe Washburn: Tickle the Shitstem

Phoebe Washburn's installation for the 2008 Whitney Biennial was a Gatorade-fueled nursery of raw two-by-fours. Its title — While Enhancing a Diminishing Deep Down Thirst, the Juice Broke Loose — brings to mind OJ Simpson's white Bronco bolting down I-405 in pursuit of refreshment. With wood-grain, yellow flowers, and tubing, Washburn created the feeling of an open-air laboratory with its own system of lemon-lime intake and flowering output. Her new installation at Zach Feuer, Tickle the Shitstem, thankfully avoids the Cloaca-esque fecal function that the name suggests. Instead, Washburn constructs her characteristic scrap-wood environment; circulating recycled water, the Shitstem produces t-shirts, dyed sea urchins, pencils, and drinks, available for purchase.

Note:

There is a belated opening reception for this exhibition on Thursday, September 4 (6-8pm).
