Dutch anarcho-punk quartet the Ex have always been a cut above the spikes-and-leather set. Since the early '80s, they've approached their politically charged squall with a sense of musical and cultural adventurism that transcends mere adolescent rebellion. The masters of frantic, discordant art rock draw from the musical traditions of Hungary, Turkey, Congo, and Ethiopia, as well as jazz and classical music, yet never sound pretentious or scattered — even in performances with late avant-garde cellist Tom Cora or members of Sonic Youth. Tonight, one of the most venerated bands in punk history performs with Ethiopian jazz saxophonist Gétatchèw Mèkurya.
