Efdemin and his Dial labelmates Pantha Du Prince and Lawrence are a loveably dour lot. Much of the label's output — including Efdemin's stellar self-titled debut — is wrapped in moody, somber ambience and punctuated by crystaline melodies. But it's not all music for falling leaves and East Berlin winters: recent Efdemin appearances, notably a one-off appearance during Montreal's Mutek and an energetic set at Sonar 2008, have been decidedly upbeat affairs, balancing new-house 12-inches and innovative techno with a keen ear for the fine line between melody and dance-floor heft.
