Patti Smith

Patti Smith will forever be known as "punk rock's poet laureate" for crashing the gates with her unlikely combination of Arthur Rimbaud and "Gloria." Proof that she remains resolute in chasing her creative muse, recent release The Coral Sea is a 2-CD live document of Smith reading an epic poem eulogizing her friend Robert Mapplethorpe, backed only by Kevin Shields' guitar. The 61-year old New Yorker — freshly garlanded with a laudatory documentary portrait (Patti Smith: Dream of Life) and her 2007 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — headlines the Roots of American Music fest today.
