Traitor is really two films in one. The first, a spinning, white-knuckled thriller about an FBI investigator (Guy Pearce) pursuing terrorist bomber Samir (Don Cheadle) across three continents, is gripping enough. But the second, a highly philosophical character study, proves far more compelling — mostly because its subject, Samir, is the exact opposite of blockbuster antihero Jason Bourne. Samir knows exactly who he is and where he stands, but no one else, from the Feds to the other Muslim terrorists, really does. The loneliness and moral disintegration that he confronts speaks to the timelessness of the human condition in a terrifying modern age.
