Free-jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor shows no sign of slowing down as he approaches 80. Having just played the JVC Jazz Festival in June, tonight he's back in New York for two sets at the Highline Ballroom. Taylor has shaped avant-garde jazz from its '50s inception and continues to expand the genre, intertwining beautiful melodies and rhythmic chords with dissonant notes. Each song builds and expands on the previous, and melodies have the freedom to change shape as they progress. It's best to abandon all expectations and simply listen.
