Year of the Fish could be called an adult fairy tale — but really, it exposes the phrase as an oxymoron. Ye Xian is sent from China to New York by her sick dad to work at a Chinatown massage parlor owned by the nefarious Mrs. Su. But when Ye Xian turns out to be ill-suited for prostitution, she is forced, Cinderella-style, into servitude. Enter a prince, naturally, in the form of a nebbishy accordionist. No one's going to score this one high points for originality or unsentimentality, but the rotoscoped animation (like that in Linklater's Waking Life) and strong performances stand out.
