Pat Willard's new book America Eats! chronicles the way we ate during the Great Depression. "America Eats" was originally a project funded by FDR's Works Progress Administration, for which down-and-out writers (including then-unknowns like Saul Bellow and Ralph Ellison) trekked to cookouts, state fairs, and the like to record group-eating dynamics and recipes — many of which involved a distressing amount of squirrel meat. (At least things have improved since then — now we're the world's fattest nation.) Cobble Hill West's Freebird Books hosts a discussion with Willard and a BBQ featuring Eudora Welty's biscuit recipe.
