Influenced by everything from punk and garage rock to the atonal avant-garde, seminal post-no-wavers Sonic Youth have churned out more than 15 full-lengths since the early '80s (to say nothing of their countless singles and collabs), saturating the experimental noise market with a never-ending slew of gritty, dissonant chords. While Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's latest work on 2006's Rather Ripped conforms to a more standard alt-rock blueprint, the band has hardly succumbed to age. This afternoon, Sonic Youth return to their native NYC for an appropriately riotous send-off to McCarren Park Pool.
