The East Village vanguard of the late '70s didn't have much patience for careerism. But if no wave has a star (or at least a star-sized personality), it's James Chance. His image — dapper zoots, Graceland-worthy pompadour — and sensationalist stage antics (such as randomly punching audience members) were just too big to be exiled to the boho ghetto. And recording spazz-jazz classics like "Flip Your Face" and "Contort Yourself" certainly helped, too. Lucky for us, time seems to have mellowed his notorious audience baiting. Also on today's bill is minimal's prodigal son Matthew Dear. He's taken lots of quixotic detours since his watershed "Dog Days" single, but whatever guise he dons, his and Chance's combined urbanite cool should rattle P.S.1's farmland facade just right.
