MoMA The Museum of Modern Art says…

With its impressionistic dreamscapes and surreal sets, Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a masterwork of art direction. Rising from the ashes of World War I, this classic horror film tells the dark tale of its titular hypnotist (Werner Krauss) and his traveling sideshow. Amid Caligari's band of freaks is the somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt); the film takes an unexpected turn towards an innovative twist ending after protagonist Francis (Friedrich Fehér) discovers that Caligari has been hypnotizing Cesare to carry out an array of nighttime murders. Preceding the feature is Jean Painlevé's deep-sea short L'Hippocampe, which poetically captures a male seahorse giving birth.
