Choreographer Bill T. Jones' directorial foray into the life of Afrobeat legend and political activist Fela Kuti hits all the right notes. Jones, whose acclaimed dance company celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, fuses energetic choreography with the sounds of 1970s Africa. Fela believed that music is a weapon to bring about social change and demand government responsibility, and Sahr Ngaujah gets that spirit right, embodying Fela's boundless passion and creativity. Also featured: Antibalas, a band credited for bringing the Afrobeat genre to a new generation. With its inspired jams, the Brooklyn-based collective transports the audience to Fela's Nigerian club, the Shrine.
