Birds have a long history in pop music: there's "Rockin' Robin," the Eagles, Cindy Birdsong, and now Sam Sparro. He may style himself as an '80s throwback, but Sparro's music blends the disco funk of that era with contemporary electronic touches, while his deep, cartoon-soul croon ties the whole Day-Glo affair together. Broadly speaking, the singer belongs in the same category as Justin Timberlake, but there's something much weirder going on here: Sparro's fashion sense, music, and accessories (those sunglasses!) mean that, in this post-irony age, it's very hard to tell if this guy's joking. But with riveting electro-soul singles like "Black and Gold," perhaps it doesn't really matter.
