Spanish troupe Noche Flamenca makes its annual voyage to Theatre 80 with El Mar, an adaption of Henrik Ibsen's play The Lady from the Sea. The company's dancers, singers, and musicians are purists of the form, deftly recreating the intimacy of the tablao with the finesse of a larger production. Principal dancer/choreographer Soledad Barrio plays Ellida, the ocean-loving protagonist who must choose between two men — an earthy doctor and an itinerant sailor. Barrio captivates audiences with hypnotic grace, staccato footwork, and an emotional rawness that unnerves as much as it lingers.
