Performing Arts: Theatre Fifty Words

In Michael Weller's Fifty Words, Jan and Adam send their son to his first sleepover, and what begins as a romantic night alone soon sours: offhand comments turn mean; innocent questions become accusations; they desire each other even as they spit insults. In two breathless hours, the carefully constructed walls guarding Jan and Adam's marriage are all but torn down. Directed by Austin Pendleton, this brutal, masterful play is painful to watch and yet Elizabeth Marvel (Top Girls) and Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) are never less than electrifying. Fifty Words reveals marriage's truths and contradictions: it's ugly, hot, heartbreaking, safe, and scary all at once, all the time.
