Juggernaut Theatre Company's Oh What War is unflinching political theatre. Inspired by Joan Littlewood's 1960s musical Oh! What a Lovely War, the production features a group of warped, shell-shocked deserters living in a muddy underground camp beneath a no-man's-land. The soldiers relate their personal experiences of wartime horrors through darkly comic songs, grotesque banter, and startlingly poetic speeches. Projected battlefield images from WWI and a soundtrack of distorted noise and voiceover narration from historical sources add context to the weird, disturbing mix. Juggernaut's anti-war message may not be new, but its multimedia delivery feels fresh.
