On the planetoid 1965UU, memory is forbidden and words mutate in meaning (i.e., you never know when a vine might become a rhinoceros). This makes romantic love, or any real emotion, problematic for Ravenelo, the cross-eyed protagonist of Mac Wellman's meticulously crafted 1965UU. Written specifically for actor Paul Lazar of Big Dance Theater and director Stephen Mellor, the five-person one-act cuts a silver-lined swath across the stage of the Chocolate Factory. The production is laden with Buddhist ideals, absurdist allusions, and serious wordplay — not to mention pyrotechnics and a protracted fart joke.
