Wickham Boyle's Calling: An Opera of Forgiveness uses the specificity of personal experience to try to better understand a pivotal moment in history. The moving one-act chamber piece composed by Douglass Geers is based on Boyle's memoir of her family's experiences during and after 9/11, with soprano Nicole Tori starring as a loving mother too busy caring for others instead of herself. The fear, confusion, and sleepless nights of that time are all there in the six-piece orchestration; for example, angry proclamations are replaced by the sung or spoken words "hope," "hold hands," and "breathe." Calling demonstrates music's timeless ability to teach — and heal.
