It's hard to imagine how director/writer Alan Ball managed to pitch Towelhead. Jasira (Summer Bishil) is a 13-year-old Arab-American girl stranded in the Texas suburbs during the Gulf War with her angry Lebanese dad, who won't even allow her to wear tampons. Rejected by her classmates, Jasira spends her afternoons babysitting the bratty kid of a racist army reservist (Aaron Eckhart) — with whom she begins an affair. Although the material may sound virtually undigestible, Ball mines the dark humor and terrific integrity that distinguished his series Six Feet Under. The result is a more honest look at pedophilia and power than has graced the screen since 1998's Happiness.
