- Composer Steve Reich, 1976
Wordless Music bridges the gap between classical and popular music, curating concerts that juxtapose music by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and experimental composer John Cage with performances from indie rockers like Deerhoof and Explosions in the Sky. Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians is a seminal work of minimalism that fits nicely into the series' eclectic reputation. Starting with one chord and building to 11, Reich creates simple, cyclical melodies. The piece is performed by Brad Lubman's genre-defying group Signal, which features members of Lincoln Center's Chamber Music Society of and spazz-jazz band Gutbucket. Also on the bill is Reich's vocal work You Are (Variations).
