Striking a nice balance between old-time musical-theatre fun and a sly critique of the Bush administration, the new original musical Bonnie & Clyde is an enjoyable retelling of the saga of America's most famous criminal couple. Part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), the show boasts some powerhouse female performers with fine voices — Diane Davis plays Bonnie and Julie Johnson is her brassy aunt, Martha. But Kevin Carolan nearly steals the show as the dress-wearing J. Edgar Hoover, who eradicates the couple but simultaneously causes their legend to grow larger.
