Twenty people struggle to escape from a 280-pound pot of spaghetti; multiple Snow Whites descend upon Manhattan, washing windows and stocking groceries; jazz is "turned inside out" by the Bad Plus. It isn't an acid trip gone wrong (or right, for that matter) — it's the Alliance Française's second-annual festival of avant-garde French dance, art, and music. Highlights of the three-week festival include an intimate reworking of Samuel Beckett's The Image, screenings of Marie Losier's bizarrely unsettling film portraits, and explosive new choreography by Christian Rizzo and Ivana Müller. The festival closes in October with a challenging, self-reflexive "diptyque" of dance pieces from Pascal Rambert and Rachid Ouramdane.
