NYPL Live opens its fall season with a debate on the symbiotic relationship between capitalism and violence. France's "rock-star philosopher," Bernard-Henri Lévy, and the Slovenian "Elvis of cultural theory," Slavoj Žižek, put forward their best arguments to dissect this complex interaction and assess the moral responsibility of the progressive movement in defending individual rights. Lévy's role in the anti-racist group SOS Racism and Žižek's analysis of 9/11 —criticized as both anti-Semitic and Zionist — shore up their iconoclastic credentials. Billed as the instigator of the event, Paul Holdengräber balances the evening out with mischief and dry wit.
