Art Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night
-
- Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night, Courtesy The Museum of Modern Art, acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest
With Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night tacked up in 98% of dorm rooms nationwide, it's hard to imagine a time when his thick impasto style was considered shockingly garish, not to mention an affront to the proud tradition of European painting. As one monumental exhibition — Dalí: Painting and Film — comes to a close, another big one opens. With Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night, MoMA gathers a host of nighttime-depicting canvases by an artist who saw that the evening holds more than mere darkness.
Note: Related lectures and gallery talks take place on October 6 and 16 at 12:30pm.
