The haiku poetry form has had its share of ups and downs since its origins in 17th-century Japan. At various times, haikus were scoffed at for their three-line, five-seven-five syllable form; at others, acclaimed literary circles celebrated them for their brevity. (Jack Kerouac famously performed them, backed up by saxophones.) In her new book of poetry, Haiku de Nueva York, Puerto Rican poet and scholar Carmen Valle experiments with the form in Spanish, exploring images of New York through the poetic traditions of the East.
