Acid guru Timothy Leary would have loved this film — to a point. Following one of those off-the-grid, Northern California forest communities whose sole source of income is marijuana, Humboldt County is what you fantasize about when you wish to turn on, tune in and, yes, drop out. We visit it through the proxy of medical school dropout Peter (Jeremy Strong), who is enticed there by the questionable feminine wiles of Fairuza Balk. Naturally, uptight Peter comes to love the freaks just as their reality is threatened by the Feds. What saves this film is its terrific level of observation about a world that, really, rarely sees the light.
