Tavis Smiley

Tavis Smiley has the smooth, deliberate oratory style of a televangelist — except he pushes a progressive viewpoint rather than a religious one. The Mississippi-born journalist and political commentator cut his teeth as an aide to Tom Bradley, the first African-American mayor of LA, and went on to host talk shows on NPR, PRI, and PBS. Smiley recently left his position as commentator on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, allegedly due to the flack he caught for not unquestioningly backing Barack Obama. The three-time NAACP Image Award-winner has stuck to his guns, however, and continues to contribute to the public discourse without being a shrill ideologue.
