This epic about a 15-year-old boy alienated from his parents in post-WWII France is, refreshingly, a Holocaust movie that is not really about the Holocaust. It is also a character study where the central character is actually a whole family. What emerges in French film A Secret — at a painstakingly deliberate pace, and on a cloud of cinematography resembling oil portraiture — are the various ways that biological and chosen family members can betray each other: through infidelities, through bullying, and, most meaningfully, by omission. As a Jewish woman passing as an Aryan, Julie Depardieu shines.
