Kristen Schaal steps out from the shadow of Flight of the Conchords and The Daily Show and hits the stage with her own maladroit improv buddy, Kurt Braunohler. The pair's latest show is a three-scene play, presented in reverse order, about an ill-fated romance between a gambling addict and a man with a harelip. Sketches are interspersed — one involving phone sex between Pocahontas and John Smith and another that calls on an audience member to assuage Schaal’s (fictional?) loneliness. Coursing beneath the chuckles is a palpable bitterness that provides a compelling counterpoint to the screwball humor, and perhaps hints at Schaal and Braunohler's dramatic aspirations.
