The Brick Theater Inc.'s third annual New York Clown Theatre Festival descends upon Williamsburg this September, proving that there's more to modern-day clowning than red noses and orange wigs. Opening with a chaotic clown parade on the L train (between Union Square and Bedford) and closing on with a mock funeral procession, the festival brings together clown troupes from all over the world for three weeks of performances and workshops. Mainstage productions at the Brick Theater are an impressive mix of clowning, mime, nouveau cirque, and vaudeville, ranging from slapstick physical comedy to existential meditations.
