In Caryl Churchill's play A Number, a father faces the consequences of cloning his only son. As the original and the carbon copy take turns accusing their father of playing God, the father begins a hesitant examination of nature vs nurture. Jay Rohloff takes a stunning and highly nuanced turn as three distinct versions of the son, Bernard: the first, gentle and inquisitive, followed by an indignant and damaged orphan and a heart-breakingly common school teacher. Ethical dilemmas and parental responsibility aside, the play's moral lies in the sanctity of human individuality.
