East Village Radio takes a break from the broadcasting booth to celebrate five years of freeform streams. The fest's eclectic lineup is studded with jazzmen (Dr. Lonnie Smith) and rappers (Devin the Dude), along with the requisite art bands (Awesome Color, High Places, Crystal Stilts, and Vivian Girls). Japanese art-metal trio Boris are sure to damage the most eardrums with their seismic freak-outs, though adventurous listeners should make a beeline for LA-based producer Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison). Lotus landed on Warp just in time to release Los Angeles, and the record is some kind of masterpiece: a psychedelic sprawl of glitchy hip-hop offering a stunning vision of the kind of spiritual music practiced by his great aunt, Alice Coltrane.
