Russian artist Alexander Melamid is a master at finding humor in serious situations, from totalitarian regimes to the plight of endangered elephants. In his first solo exhibition since the end of his successful partnership with Vitaly Komar, Melamid flips the formula by portraying today's hip-hop entertainers in the somber style of Socialist realism. Rappers like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West are depicted as literal icons of celebrity; gazing out from towering life-size portraits, they make you want to both laugh at them and bow down to kiss their Nikes.
