Despite some stock notions of being doll-obsessed, weight-conscious, and born-to-be homemakers, young girls have voices too, and they can be heard loud and clear at the annual winter mentor-mentee pair readings hosted by non-profit organization Girls Write Now. GWN pairs at-risk, high-school girls aspiring to be writers with professional women wordsmiths (including journalist Erika Hayasaki and hip-hop playwright/Nick Jr. writer Radha Blank) to refine writing skills and exercise their voices via public readings of personally written pieces. In celebration of National Mentoring Month, New York Times bestselling author and 2008 National Book Award winner for Young People's Literature, Judy Blundell, also speaks at the event.
