Note:
The ballet is part of the Four Voices program.
New York City Ballet usually dances to the music of one Russian composer whose last name begins with "S." Last season instead of returning to the venerable Stravinsky, Alexei Ratmansky choreographed Concerto DSCH to Igor's contemporary Dmitri Shostakovich. The title, which can be interpreted as either the composer's initials in musical notation or a mockery of the Communist fetish for abbreviations, is as playful as the ballet itself; dancers are in two groups reflecting the concerto's silly and romantic moods. Alas, the return of Concerto DSCH is bittersweet, because the brilliant Ratmansky is now working with the American Ballet Theatre. But, while ABT has the funding to back that choreographer, the company doesn't have an Ashley Bouder or Wendy Whelan.
