If you prefer your celebrity couples in period costume, this production of Uncle Vanya is a smart choice; Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal both star in the Classic Stage Company's adaptation of Chekov's tragicomedy. While Sarsgaard out-acts his fiancee, the entire cast — in particular, Meryl Streep's daughter, Mamie Gummer — rises to the challenge of this classic. Tony-award nominated director Austin Pendleton teases suppressed desires out the staid lives of a wealthy, well-known Russian family as it deteriorates on stage.
