Playwright Lynn Nottage uses Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and her Children as a jumping-off point to explore the brutality of what's been called "Africa's first World War," focusing on women whose voices have been largely silent until now. Nottage's Mama Nadi runs a bar in the Congo that caters to both the government and rebel soldiers, providing a hedonistic escape and requiring its patrons to check politics — and their guns — at the door. However, the two cannot stay separate for very long, and as the violence intensifies, no one is allowed to remain neutral. An excellent cast helmed by director Kate Whoriskey ignites Nottage's words with an urgency that drives this story to an unexpected conclusion.
