Last century, California proved to be one of the most fertile centers for composers of new music. Well-funded LA and SF-based ivory towers inspired and nurtured the likes of Henry Cowell, John Cage, Terry Riley, and Morton Subotnik. Chart-toppers they're not, but these composers' experimental compositions led to breakthroughs in minimalism, sound collage, and atonality, which are now mainstays everywhere from avant-garde performance spaces to mainstream radio. Over six nights, Julliard hosts performances of work from these and many other guiding lights of sound art and contemporary classical music. The series concludes with the illustrious John Adams (of Nixon in China fame) conducting his modernist opera The Death of Klinghoffer.
