Hedda Gabler Tesman is neither subtle nor delicate, which is why Christopher Shin's adaptation and Ian Rickson's production of Ibsen's classic hits so hard. Confining Hedda to a meticulously decorated home, surrounding her with characters dressed in muted colors, and hearing P.J. Harvey's staccato melodies running in her head suffocate this unhappy woman. Her seemingly misplaced anger makes sense. Mary-Louise Parker's Hedda is a rigid, predatory creature. Her purple gown is both a reminder of Snow White's Evil Queen and a stain on the already troubled Tesman family. Fans of Ms. Parker know she was great playing a woman who burned down her own home. Here, she's even more remarkable as woman who burns everything she encounters.
