Eight swept the major awards at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival — including the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, which brings the show to our own P.S. 122 — and proves that 23-year-old playwright Ella Hickson is a serious talent. Performed by the equally young and gifted actors from the Edinburgh University Theatre Company, Eight delivers a rich portrait of modern Britain through a series of incisive monologues from characters ranging from a single working mom to an art gallery owner whose lover has committed suicide. Several veer toward the overly emotional, but Hickson's smart writing and the actors' commitment to their material make for an utterly engaging production.
