Stripped unfolds like a rehearsal, the lights on and the dancers clad in sweatpants. In fact, this "theater" is the studio where Doug Varone and his talented company rehearse all of their work. Adding to the casual vibe, Varone personally introduces every short work and gives a little background about each. At one point, he speaks of the difficulty of pairing existing music with movement and the contrasting nature of his creative process — the pairing of small gestures with large sweeping movements. It's a refreshing approach that deepens the audience's understanding, while also focusing our attention on important details. And the result is a rich portrait of an accomplished artist in action.
