"Give it a sweet melody" was the aesthetic must for Vestie Davis, a painter who froze mid-century New York in winsome, ordered, flat-colored detail. Davis' professional résumé was of various collar — train conductor, circus barker, undertaker — and, in his bustling tableaux, the streetwise observations join with a fine-drawn love for the city's architecture and populace. Thirty-six of these back-in-the-day drawings and paintings decorate the walls of the Folk Museum's Lincoln Center branch, where the clangs of construction further accent his frames as aides-memoires of a faded era.
